The online pharmacy market shows a 23.5% growth: numbers and trends in July 2023
The online pharmacy market is gaining momentum, closing the 27th week of 2023 with a 23.5% increase compared to the same seven days of the previous year. This indicates a 9% year-on-year growth in value and a 0.1% growth in volume (the first time above zero since the beginning of the year).
These figures are from the Iqvia report, which provides updated numbers and percentages for e-commerce in pharmacies and parapharmacies from July 3rd to July 9th. In just over six months, online sales have exceeded 402 million euros, with 36.4 million packages sold.
Among the various segments, dietary supplements remain the leading category, generating nearly 200 million euros in sales and selling over 14 million packages in 27 weeks. This represents an 11.9% growth in value and an 8.2% growth in volume on an annual basis.
Other categories following at a distance include personal care, with sales totaling 130.7 million euros and 11 million units in the past six months (11.7% and 7% growth compared to 2022), and the over-the-counter (OTC) medication basket, which recorded sales of 42.5 million euros and 5.6 million packages sold (+9.8% and +3% cumulative growth).
The sunscreen category stands out for its dynamism, with an 11.9% growth in value and a 3.4% growth in volume on an annual basis. Similarly, products for female beauty show a significant growth of 25% and 21% in value and volume respectively. The veterinary segment has also experienced notable growth in both the week and the year.
