Pharmacy Market: Trends and Figures as of Week 26, 2023
Even in the week from Monday, June 26 to Sunday, July 2, the pharmacy market’s trend growth maintains a gliding trend, slowly eroding sales and volumes.
This is the picture coming from Iqvia’s latest report, which updates figures and trends in the channel to the 26th week of 2023: in six months, pharmacy totals a turnover of 13.1 billion euros, +0.6 percent over the same period in 2022, and packages sold for 1.25 billion, down 4.3 percent from last year.
The curve remains downward, but less pronounced, for the prescription drug segment, which in week 26 lost 0.6 percent in value and 3 percent in volume. This results in growth over the six-month period that is still positive but still declining, +2.1 percent in turnover (it was +2.2 percent seven days earlier) and +0.2 percent in units sold (+0.3 percent).
Doing even worse is the retail sector, which in the week loses 8.4 percent in value and 18.2 percent in volume and in the annual trend leaves 1.2 and 10.8 percent respectively.
On the other hand, the rebound in personal care continues in sharp contrast, growing 11.2% in value and 4.1% in volume over the seven days for a six-month increase of 7.5% in sales and 2.9% in packages sold.
Among the basket’s leading segments is dermocosmetics, which in the 26th week puts in a nice stretch (+15.5% in values and +11.3% in volumes) that is positively reflected in trend growth (+8.9 and +6.2% respectively).
The recovery of solar continues, which for the first time since the beginning of the season showspositive trend growth in values (but not in volumes).
Instead, the decline of the dietary supplements and vitamins group, which shows a progressive annual negative in both values and volumes. It can finally be said to be open season, however, for sunscreens, which for the first time close the week with sales at higher values and volumes than the same seven days in 2022.
