The role of resveratrol in treating inflammation in individuals with cardiovascular disease
Chronic inflammation is one of the main factors involved in the development and progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Resveratrol is a polyphenol (stilbene polyphenol) with a molecular structure very similar to that of estrogen, which in fact acts as an estrogen agonist, as well as possessing antioxidant properties.
It is found in wine grapes (Vitis vinifera L.), especially in the skins of the berries; other food sources of this substance include peanuts, pine nuts, and mulberry berries.
It is also present in significant amounts in the dried roots of the plant Polygonum cuspidatum Sich at Zucc., also known as Japanese honeysuckle.
Several scientific studies have described the effect of resveratrol on biomarkers of inflammation in subjects with cardiovascular disease, but the results are not yet considered conclusive.
This recent systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials evaluated just that, and specifically the effect of resveratrol supplementation on TNF-a, IL-6, and CRP levels in people with cardiovascular problems.
After a search of the major electronic databases (Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Scopus), six randomized, controlled trials were selected for meta-analysis, i.e., quantitative evaluation, which yielded the following results.
Resveratrol statistically significantly reduces serum levels of C-reactive protein (p = 0.01) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (p = 0.02) but does not exert a significant effect on serum concentration of interleukin-6 IL-6 in this type of problem.
These results suggest that resveratrol contributes to reducing inflammatory states and therefore can be used as an adjunctive treatment in individuals with cardiovascular disease.
