Efficacy of ayurvedic preparations in improving glycemic control in subjects with type 2 diabetes
Several medicinal plants are used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus, and some recent research has shown their efficacy and safety.
This recent systematic review evaluated and summarized the available efficacy and safety evidence on this topic in the international literature.
A comprehensive search of sources in 18 electronic databases through January 2021 was preliminarily conducted, and data synthesis was conducted using narrative synthesis and random-effects meta-analysis.
From a total of 32,519 articles identified in the literature, 219 (199 randomized controlled trials) were included in the systematic review covering a total of 21,191 participants and 98 Ayurvedic preparations.
The data review found that in subjects with type 2 diabetes, a reduction in glycated hemoglobin was achieved compared to placebo control following the intake of the following plants: boswellia (Boswellia serrata Roxb. ), gynostemma (Gynostemma pentaphyllum Th unb.), ampalaya (Momordica charantia L.), black cumin (Nigella sativa L.), plantain (Plantago ovata Forssk.), Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.), fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) and nettle (Urtica dioica L.).
Fasting blood glucose was also reduced by 4-56 mg/dl with the intake of some Ayurvedic preparations. Adverse events, where reported, were mostly minor and mainly related to gastrointestinal tract issues.
The authors conclude that the current evidence suggests the benefit of a number of ayurvedic herbs and preparations in improving glycemic control in individuals with type 2 diabetes, calling for further quality randomized controlled trials to strengthen this promising evidence of efficacy.
