Clinical Study: CoQ10 Phytosome Supplementation Improves Muscle Strength and Reduces Asthenia in Elderly Individuals Treated with Statins
Doctors often associate statins, widely prescribed drugs for controlling cholesterol, with side effects, including muscle asthenia, which is characterized by a general sensation of weakness and muscle fatigue. One hypothesized mechanism for this asthenia is the lowering of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) levels in the bloodstream, an important cofactor involved in energy production in muscle cells.
Researchers conducted a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial on a population of elderly individuals affected by muscle asthenia associated with statin intake to investigate the potential of dietary supplementation with CoQ10 phytosome in mitigating this condition.
Participants were randomized to receive either 2 indistinguishable placebo pills daily or 150 mg of CoQ10 phytosome. Asthenia and grip strength (HGs), 1-minute sit-to-stand repetitions (STS), and 2-minute step tests (2MST) were performed at baseline and 8-week follow-up.
All enrolled patients completed the study. After the first 4 weeks of dietary supplementation, CoQ10 phytosome supplementation was associated with a more significant improvement in asthenia compared to placebo (p <0.05).
At the 8-week follow-up, patients undergoing dietary supplementation with CoQ10 experienced significant improvements in asthenia (-30.0±20.0%), HGs (+29.8±3.6%), 1-minute STS repetitions (+36.4±3.9%), and 2MST (11.1±1.8%) (p <0.05 versus baseline and versus placebo).
This research suggests that chronic supplementation with CoQ10 phytosome could be an effective strategy to improve muscle strength and reduce asthenia in elderly patients taking statins. This approach could have significant implications for the clinical management of this population, contributing to improving their quality of life and ability to perform daily activities.
