Caralluma Fimbriata: an effective ally in the fight against obesity and metabolic syndrome
Obesity is one of the main public health challenges of the 21st century.
Caralluma fimbriata (CF) has been studied for its hypoglycemic, hypolipemic, hepatoprotective, and antioxidant properties, with significant results.
This plant is traditionally consumed by ethnic populations in central India for obesity management. Numerous bioactive constituents have been identified, including pregnane glycosides, known to suppress appetite and increase endurance, making this plant valuable in the fight against metabolic syndrome.
This review provides an updated overview of the most recent literature on the nutritional composition, safety parameters, and therapeutic potential of C. fimbriata for metabolic syndrome.
C. fimbriata aids in fat burning and hunger suppression by inhibiting the enzyme citrate lyase, thus preventing the body from producing fat, and inhibiting malonyl-CoA production, promoting the oxidation of stored fatty acids.
A recent study examined the effect of Caralluma fimbriata extract on satiety signals and body composition in 83 overweight adults, men and women aged 20 to 50, for 16 weeks.
The placebo group showed increased plasma leptin levels at week 16, while the group taking 1 g/day of Caralluma fimbriata extract showed no significant changes. Additionally, waist circumference in the CF extract group decreased by 2.7 cm.
The placebo group gained weight, while the extract group lost weight compared to the beginning of the study.
Another study investigated the effect of Caralluma fimbriata extract on body weight, appetite, and lipid profile in obese rats, showing a significant reduction in body weight and lipid profile.
Finally, the effect of CF extract (500 mg twice a day) combined with dietary restriction and exercise was studied in 33 overweight and obese subjects, showing a significant decline in BMI, body weight, hip circumference, total fat, and systolic blood pressure.
For human consumption, C. fimbriata is considered pharmacologically safe. Therefore, CF extract could be a safe and effective appetite suppressant, useful for weight loss and reducing blood sugar and lipids.
